self portrait tuesday #11 (self documentary)

all month long, I've been wanting to try my hand at the self documentary challenge. I think it may be time for a digital camera, folks. I have mad love for my sweet canon rebel EOS, love the way the film looks. and nothing really compares with the giddiness I feel the moment I walk into the camera shop to pick up my film. BUT I have sixty or so rolls of undeveloped film from the past four years, SIXTY ROLLS. I keep trying to catch up but we just keep taking roll after roll after roll and I'm beginning to lose hope. in the past, I have borrowed a digital camera from my brother and sister-in-law (thanks, y'all) but now I must look into full-time ownership. it's just too expensive to play around with regular old film. wish I did my own developing. but I don't.

and somehow, I have gotten really off track from the subject of this self documentary.

which is lunch. everyday, ward and I have lunch together (yes, I do realize how lucky we are). I'll admit, I take these lovely lunches for granted. they are essentially what get me through my day, through my week. we almost always opt for cheapo slices of pizza and one of our favorite places to go is fellini's. it's cheap and fast and there's a fountain there that reminds me of italy. we sit next to that fountain and feel the sprays of water and I feel just a little bit like I am back in rome. lunches are for goofing, they are for venting and complaining (and sometimes arguing). we talk about the kids. we talk about the week. we dream about what we are going to do on the weekend, we dream about where we're going to be in five years. sometimes we say very little. sometimes ezra sleeps through and it feels like we are on a special lunch date (rare). sometimes he is a dream and giggles all through lunch, stuffing mandarin oranges and tiny bites of cheese pizza in his mouth with such a cuteness I cannot help but swoon. sometimes he is a terror and the both of us spend the short hour retrieving pieces of food that have been thrown across the room. even still, I'll take that. I'll take it all. I'd be a mess without the daily lunches.

  2. Wow, how lucky you are--daily lunches?! I love these Self-Portrait Tuesday photo collages I see all over the place...but can't for the life of me figure out how one posts a clump of photos like that. As for your film rolls...we have a few undeveloped rolls taken right before we got our digital. One of these days I'm going to get them developed and be totally surprised at what we were shooting a few years ago... :)

  4. Mmmm. I know it's tacky to say 'I know what you mean,' but I really related to this post. I'm lucky--my husband works from home now and so we have lunch almost every day together to. And before that--when we both worked we'd still meet and eat and it's the best ritual to have. Sharing that time. Sharing food. Even if it's pizza--which looks delicious by the way. I loved the color in these pictures--and that you included your pretty shoes and Ezra crying, both. Such a contrast.

Oh, and you will swoon when you get a good digital camera. They are just too cool. You can take 200 pictures at once. TWO HUNDRED. It's so fun!

  7. thanks everyone, for such kind words...

marilyn-- this is my first attempt at a photocollage. my ha, my husband totally had to help me do it in photoshop! fun, though. I wonder if that's the way everyone does it...? glad to know I'm not the only one who has rolls of undeveloped film. maybe if we got a digital camera, we could actually keep up with the developing... here's hoping. thanks for commenting, for stopping by!

christina-- got a little taste of what the digital camera has to offer (through borrowing one) and yes, I KNOW that I'll love it.

  8. I love this.
I completely understand, too. Sue and I have lunch almost every day. We met while working in the same building. Now years later, we work one block away from each other but we still love love love having lunch together almost every day.
    It's a blessing. I know you understand.

  10. Nice compositions. This seems to illustrate moments in the life of a modern mother...happily frantic and crazed, required to pay attention to what surrounds the members of her family.
    ...although, Ward looks kinda mad.

The fifties-esque type on the door reminds me of a fifties housewife. I'm left to wonder: what was that like? And how does that compare with being a devoted wife today? Deeeeeeeeep...

  11. I love that post. The photos are awesome, the description is awesome. And not off track of the theme at all - a wonderful interpretation of the theme, I think. Thanks for sharing that and being so expressive about it.

  12. 60 rolls! That makes me feel better about the dozen or so rolls I still have undeveloped. I haven't a clue what's on them, I just know I have moved twice and brought them with me each time!

Your photographs and your writing are wondeful!
