things I remember about the day I made this polaroid:
drove up to the top of black rock mountain at sunset
twas cold and windy
stood at the edge, marveled
for a second, we were quiet

things I remember about the day I made this polaroid:
sunlight hit the kitchen window around eleven am
and the bottles practically sang
and outside, leaves fell
and it was cold enough to wear a sweater
and it finally felt like october

327/365

things I remember about the day I made this polaroid:
walked the streets of our old portland neighborhood
walked by our old house on 64th avenue
walked along the ridge with mt. hood in the distance
made our way to ava's old school, found a side door that was open
wandered the halls, found our way to old classrooms
had feelings
had all the feelings
HAD SO MANY FEELINGS

326/365

things I remember about the day I made this polaroid:
drank coffee in the morning with light pouring in
felt the whole of the day ahead of us, giddy at the prospect
spent hours at the chicago art institute, meandering and meandering and meandering
walked out the side entrance at closing time, completely dazed
looked up and spied the tiny people
was quite taken with the tiny people
but did not think the scene was right for instant film
took the polaroid anyway

325/365

things I remember about the day I made this polaroid:
needed a photograph of ava for a piece I was writing for uppercase about lockets
shot in the backyard in late afternoon
blew through a whole pack of expired 600 in minutes
and I remember how good that felt
and I remember how good the air felt too-- clear and true
and I remember thinking, in just one month she will graduate
and I remember thinking, in just one month everything will change

20 October 2019
324/365

things I remember about the day I made this polaroid:
was on my way from sante fe to albuquerque with tracy and lisa to catch a flight back home
decided to take the turquoise trail in a rented car to see what we could see
wanted to stop along the way at least a hundred times
must have taken at least a hundred photos of the sky
listen, I could not stop taking photos of the sky
when we stopped for gas one last time, I got out of the car, promptly took this polaroid
on the flight home to atlanta, I could not stop looking at it
nothing beats a polaroid sky, I thought
nothing

have yet to find other cameras that make photographs like polaroid cameras do. photographs that feel like what I remember, look like how things feel.

everywhere instant

polaroids look and feel like stills from old home movies that play out in my head. I suppose that's why I love them so much.

polaroid week!

(day one)

(day two)

(day three)

(day four)

(day five)

(day six)
polaroid week was a couple of weeks ago and I just love how everything sort of stops for a sliver of time, for a sliver of people (for instant photography-loving people). admittedly, I hoard all my best polaroids, save them all up for the two different weeks out of the year that polaroid week happens. I sort of love hoarding them. I don't know why.
the entire week's offerings are here and a few of my favorites are here and golly, I was honored to be included in this best-of list over on pryme.
day two, guys. I made it to day two of nablopomo. small victories.

this is my hustle

'roid week, polaroid week, week of the polaroid (all titles accepted, all titles apply) was last week. I will admit to struggling with it just a little bit this go round, lest ye think every polaroid week is one big fat happy polaroid pony ride. it took a few days for general enthusiasm to set in, for my head to catch up with everyone else in the group. the SX-70 jammed and spit out frame after frame. I had less film than I thought I did and all the ideas felt stupid et cetera et cetera et cetera. but then, ava with the curtain and the light and the majestic diner on the way home and I was reminded: the extra work is worth it. the magic ones are there. you just have to dig a little. sometimes, a lot.
coincidentally, I just wrote this very thing-- this value in the working and the digging thing-- like, three weeks ago. I wrote a little piece for the fine folks over at instantly framed-- a guide to instant photography (which you can read here) and apparently, I do not practice what I preach. rather, I am slow to practice what I preach.
but when I really want to give up on instant photography all together, I go here and I think, holy crap what would the world be without instant film? I mean, really? I don't want to know.

week of the polaroid
aka 'roid week: I get out, I shoot, I share. and then I get lost in the 'roid week pool, image after image of instant spectacular. I'll tell you, my flickr favorites have never been so happy. inspiration for days! exclamation point!
comes but once a year, friends. feels like the last bastion of true internet community.
