as seen by

me, through the eyes (and lens) of my brother. I'm forever thankful for it, don't even really have any words for it except I wish we could have seen into the future when we were kids. wish we could have seen who we are now, what we do, what we make. I wonder what we would have thought of all this. I like to think about things like that.

and then there's this:

I'm amazed by the work my brother makes. I really am. and I'm honored to see little bits and pieces of projects we've worked on together in this reel. I'm excited about the future. friends, if you want to fall down a beautiful, beautiful rabbit hole, head on over here. get lost in nate's work. it's easy to do.

p.s. if that first film has you jonesin for polaroid fun times, stay tuned. instant magic workshops (two!) are happening. announcements= right around the corner.

in other news, a few workshops are in the works. I might be coming to a city near you, 2014 might be a busy year. I am excited.

this is my favorite class

because instant photography plus middle schoolers? yes. yes, this is my kind of class. my favorite kind of class.

twas a small but wildly enthusiastic group. they rolled right through the challenge of shooting through grey rainy weather and met peel apart film catastrophes head on. and the girl who just about drove me crazy the first day of class, the girl who would. not. stop. picking up cameras and pushing buttons shortly won me over. she was there every wednesday, ready to shoot, determined to master that land camera beast. her little hands could barely pull the film out of the compartment when we first started. every week, she struggled. but then-- then she got it. and she began to wield that thing like a pro. she became what I like to call UNSTOPPABLE.

we should also talk about how my daughter signed up, even though I told her she didn't have to, told her she could totally skip it and my feelings would not be hurt. but she decided to take the class anyway and so of course my mama heart wanted to burst into a few thousand pieces because oh my goodness her shots were beautiful. I had to refrain from saying so at least seven hundred times. maybe more.

there will, of course, be more classes. which means more stories, more images. more kids with polaroid cameras in their hands. and for this, I am infinitely thankful.

instant magic

instant magic

excited to announce I'll be teaching a one-day instant photography workshop at the lovely teahouse studios in berkeley on saturday, september 17th!

I'll tell you, I receive more emails about my polaroid work--- how did I get started? what polaroid cameras do I shoot with? what cameras do I recommend and where can they be found? how much will they cost? what film do I use? what do I look for when I'm shooting? how do I get the colors? I cannot tell you how fun it's been to develop a workshop that covers all these questions (and more). this is the workshop I desperately needed when I first started out, the one I went looking for and could not find. I know from experience just how overwhelming the realm of instant photography can be. feels like there are a hundred different types of cameras and films to experiment with-- each with their own advantages, their own quirks. so I took all my experience, my trials and errors, all my research and experimentation to create one big hands-on super fun instant photography workshop. busting at the seams with instant photography love, friends. and that's the truth.

so if you'd like to spend an afternoon shooting with a gaggle of polaroid cameras in a gorgeous light-filled studio, get thee to my workshop. we'll be playing with a wide variety of cameras, shooting with both integral and peel apart film and naturally, we'll take to the streets of berkeley for the most awesome photo walk ever.

(a look at my first instant photography workshop can be found here and more information on the upcoming workshop can be found here. space is limited so if you're interested, get your registration on. oh, and if you need further incentive, the lovely susannah conway will be teaching the same weekend! on sunday! sign up for both workshops for the ultimate photography weekend)

magic

yay

is there anything better? probably not

wall of happy

felt good to lay out all those pretty polaroid cameras and packs of film, to watch all the fine workshop peoples pick them up and hold them in their hands. felt good to send the peoples out into that small coastal town armed and ready, watch them all trickle back into the house and tape their favorite polaroids onto that giant white wall. and I'll tell you, it felt good to teach again. really really good.

hammering out details for workshops in both portland and san francisco. details to come, my friends.

p.s. extra special thanks to the impossible project for the goodies. giddy over all the goodies.
