this party is not wanting to end

because I don't know what I was thinking with a five-day super happy 2-for-1 sale when I am so clearly a seven-day sale kind of girl. seven is my number, seven is my joint. so three more days for the unofficially annual summer super happy 2-for-1 sale, which will (seriously for real) end at midnight (PST) on tuesday, july 30th.

I don't know about you but I like summer.

how bout some super happy

unofficial annual super happy 2-for-1 summer salefolks! well, because it's summer. and I think you all know how I feel about summer.

buy one print, get one free. buy two, get two. three, four, five and so on and so forth. to further sweeten the pot, new prints have been addedwith love, with so much love. here's how it works: order the print (or prints) you'd like and then, in that super handy 'message to the seller' box, tell me which print (or prints) you'd like as your freebies. special runs five days only-- today, july 23rd through saturday, july 28th.

fyi, I have been known to slip a little extra summer somethin in with the super happy sale prints. just sayin.

list forty-five: a summer manifesto

these are

(as inspired by one of my favorite list makers, the incomparable mollie greene)

I will play records in the backyard

I will pick berries til my fingers are stained

I will bake things with said hand-picked berries

I will take walks with my husband

I will hang my sheets outside to dry

I will wear my skirted bathing suit with pride

I will take the kids to the drive-in

I will watch scary movies with ava

I will watch action movies with ezra

I will have money stashed for the occasional ice cream truck

I will share jars of flowers from my garden with my friends

I will play two square with ezra for longer than five minutes

I will get up early to hit the yard sales with ava

I will paint my fingers and toes varying shades of aqua

I will jump through sprinklers

I will ride my bike during magic hour

I will read books outside

I will cross a few things off the list

I will insist on the cherry snow cone

I will insist on the cherry-dipped ice cream cone

I will help ava transform her room

I will not cry when she turns thirteen

I will talk into fans, I will pretend I am darth vader

I will make room for small adventures

I will say yes to bubbles

I will say yes to water balloons

I will always say yes to the park

I will always have popsicles in the freezer

I will stop worrying about things I can't control

I will put it in his hands

I will dream about lightning bugs

I will swim in the ocean

sundays (21/52)

sunday, may 26th: just before paris and a longstanding pre-travel ritual. the hand-washing of the favorite blouse.

(slowly but surely I am catching up with you, sundays project)

sundays (20/52)

sunday, may 19th: like mother/like daughter, a little lodekka patchwork, three peoples I love (more than anything in the world), the lodekka five dollar sale rack, a new purse, that girl of mine.

24 June 2013

sundays (19/52)

sunday, may 12th: waaaaay back when on mothers day, the continuing of a few yearly traditions, the beginning of a few new ones. old: breakfast in bed, cupcakes, photobooth strips. new: the release of one pink balloon, the planting of pink flowers. pink, her favorite color.

(every sunday, as much as I can manage).

paris

in paris, my hair was wavier.

mysteriously fantastically wavier. and the strawberries smelled like candy and the metro seats were different colors, different shapes. at every stop, every single stop. and the cobblestones felt good and warm beneath my feet, the alleyways were deep and narrow (just as I imagined they might be) and begged to be wandered. and every so often, there were accordion players (which meant there was the sound of accordion music) and there was also something called an almond croissant which I think maybe changed my life.

perhaps most importantly, ava was there. ava was there with me in paris, and I have so many of you to thank for that. surely we will do nothing but talk about it for the rest of our days. we will talk about the first croques-monsieur we ate, about how we could see the eiffel tower from our apartment window. just barely, but we could see it. and we will certainly talk about the way it sparkled at night. we'll talk about irene and how much we adore her (actually, we will probably fight over who likes her more) and we'll talk about the time I tried to buy apricots (in french) at the little neighborhood farmers market and failed miserably. we'll talk about the sweet boulangerie on the corner where we picked up warm baguettes, about the most beautiful pink cloud of cotton candy on a stick, maybe ever, about pretty french macaroons and crepes that oozed nutella. in the same breath, we will talk about the sweet crepe maker who insisted we sit and enjoy. we'll talk about the ominous organ music that flooded notre dame as we made our way through and then how we wandered the latin quarter afterwards with lovely xanthe and discovered tiny music boxes and enormous meringues (which we ate on the metro on the way home). inevitably, we will talk about ava in the audience at tedx and how she got me through, about the crazy mob scene at the polaroid workshop table afterwards, about the magic that irene made.

we will talk about about how we climbed up onto the roof through the apartment ceiling's skylight at magic hour, how the light fell like honey on the buildings and the rooftops all around us. we'll talk about the afternoon we spent following dusty fleamarket corridors this way and that, sifting through lovely junky jumbles along the way, about the little vintage keychains that seemed to be everywhere and the pink paper parasol I fell in love with (and then promptly lost on the metro on the way home). we'll talk about the teeny tiny pink forks they gave us to eat our french fries with, about too many bottles of orangina and cheese that seemed to melt in our mouths. we'll talk about the french junk food we bought at the supermarket (for science), about the time we squeezed into the photobooth with irene,  about how I chased after two accordion players with my polaroid SX-70 like a crazy woman. we'll talk about the time we saw the mona lisa through a sea of iphones and ipads and digital cameras, about the day it rained and rained, til we were soaked through but we stopped and left our tiny red locks on the pont des arts anyway.

we will talk about digging through bargain bins deep with clothing at sympa, how we got lost at least a hundred times on the extraordinary streets of montmartre, looking for the house of van gogh or toulouse lautrec or picasso's studio. how we ended up at the cafe where amelie worked, ordered the creme brulee then fought over who got to break the surface first (ava, natch). we'll talk about that night we spread gobs of nutella on toasted crustless white bread from the supermarket, turned out all the lights in the apartment, climbed up into the loft and watched amelie on my computer. like dorks. we'll talk about how we longed to lay on the forbidden green grasses of every park, how the language seemed to flow around us like liquid, like so much liquid. we'll talk about the time that lady got on the metro with her sad eyes and her sad microphone to sing sad songs and no one seemed to see her, no one seemed to hear. then we will talk about how we wanted to cry when she gently pushed her way off at the next stop. we will talk about the dreamy toy boats at luxembourg gardens and the little vintage shop with all the striped shirts and the old art nouveau metro signs and I am sure we will talk about my incessant need to repeat each metro stop after it was announced. barbes rochechouart. barbes rochechouart.  how I insisted the announcements were like mini language lessons and who were we to refuse? surely we will talk about pretty doorways with scrolling black ironwork and pretty bicycles with honey-colored baskets. and cheap kitschy souvenirs and cute french boys. and we will most certainly talk about how I could not, would not shut up about my newly wavy hair.

and then, when we are done talking about all the things, all the lovely paris things, we will talk about how we are already plotting our return.

26 May 2013

thank you

super gigantic thank you to everyone who came out yesterday to support that sweet girl of mine, to ethelkays grilled cheese for hosting (and really, for going waaaaay above and beyond). and to everyone who has bought prints so far, to everyone who left kind, encouraging words here. thank you, thank you, thank you. that ava? she's walking on clouds. and quite frankly, so am I.

and now we are paris bound.

23 May 2013

because, yum

see anything you like here? I'm talking to you, portland.

my friend julie's dream was to open a grilled cheese food cart  and that's what that girl done went and did. best grilled cheese (and lemonade) in all of portland, maybe even in the state of oregon and I am not even blowing smoke here. you think I have to say this because she's my friend and all but I AM NOT EVEN KIDDING AROUND. grilled cheese sandwiches so good your knees will buckle. lemonade so perfect, visions of it will dance in your head while you sleep.

and this saturday, half of all lemonade sales will go towards ava's trip to paris! regular lemonade, raspberry lemonade and rumor has it, marionberry lemonade. also, ava's prints will be for sale. also, grilled cheese. GRILLED. CHEESE.

so if you're local, come on out:

ethelkays grilled cheese and lemonade
4549 NE 60th, portland (duh)
saturday, may 25th, 10-4

p.s. thanks so much for buying prints, friends. ava has been walking on clouds lo these last twenty-four hours and my mama heart has officially burst wide open.

21 May 2013

the one where ava gets to go too

paris. ava is coming with me to paris

initially, this was the plan. it's what irene wanted, what ward and I wanted (well and you know it's what ava wanted) but the circumstances, they flipped and they flopped and for a while there it just didn't seem possible. though the more we thought about it, the more we talked about it, the more we realized just how important it was that she do this, how major it'd be for her to come with me-- to connect with kids from a different part of the world, to explore what it means to see the world differently. and then, paris. to experience paris, one of the greatest cities in the world.

these are the kinds of experiences that crack a person wide open, that change you forever and even though it seemed financially impossible (and impossibly impractical), we wanted to give her this. more than anything. so we decided we'd do whatever it'd take to make it happen. and now, thanks to irene (and a few other key people), it's a done deal. still, there's a boatload of work to do. and so ava has thrown her proverbial hat in the ring.

for a limited time, prints of her photographs will be for sale in my shop and all proceeds will go towards the cost of her end of the trip. these are images (the images you see above) that have been carefully selected by her and friends, SHE IS EXCITED. that someone might actually buy one, that someone might actually want to own one. it's been a lovely, heartbreaking sort of thing to witness and of course, my mama heart wants to burst into a thousand pieces. instead, I'll just try and hold it all together while I pass along along the necessary information:

to purchase one of ava's prints please go {here}

(local portland people, there will be an extra special opportunity for you-- more on that tomorrow)

sundays (18/52)

sunday, may 5th: scenes from the alameda flea with miss mati (due to a last minute turn of events, whence I found myself in oakland for work for about five minutes).

how bout last minute trips to the fleamarket (which, to me, feels a little like a jackpot lottery win). how bout I am almost caught up with this here sundays thing. how bout it's monday and I'm just happy to be alive.
