enjoying
every once in awhile, ava becomes obsessed with a particular song and will demand it be played over and over again. while this normally drives me nuts, I can't help but secretly enjoy her latest fixation-- classic eighties tune 'happy birthday' by altered images (take a little listen here). since ward and I share a car, we find ourselves spending more time than we'd like on the road (lots of driving back and forth between home and work, running errands and blah, blah, blah). what this really means is that we are listening to 'happy birthday' about 73 times a day. ah, but I am thoroughly enjoying ava and her little rock-out sessions. I watch her through the rearview mirror as she dances in her seat and tries so hard to get the words right. she is in her own little world, looking out the window, singing her song. I purse my lips together tightly to keep from giggling because I know how sensitive she is-- if she thinks I am laughing, she will immediately become self-conscious and this great little scene that I have been joyously witnessing on the sly will come to an abrupt (and tragic) end. "can you make it louder, momma? get it LOUDER!" she says. I ask her to say 'please' but I am smiling as I crank the volume up.

ReplyDeleteOh how cute :)
ReplyDeleteThat picture is awesome too!
As I listened to the song, I could just see Ava dancing in the car...too cute. I have a tip for you, if you turn the front speakers all the way down and only crank the back speakers you can hear them singing loud and clear. The best part is they have no idea. I do it all the time.
ReplyDeleteCan you put a hidden camera on the rearview mirror - you know someone who can get you one of those - and get that on video?
ReplyDeletethat is a w e s o m e!
ReplyDeleteshe is so stinkin cute!
and that song!!!
ok, seriously
i haven't heard that since i was about 8 or 9 and for years i have wondered what that happy birthday song was that i remember from the early days of mtv. i love it!!
Man, that little girl of ours. She is quite something, I must say.
ReplyDeleteAltered Images had another somewhat hit with "I Could Be Happy," which I remember seeing the video to on our local video music channel (we had this cool video network before MTV came to our town). The singer was this über-cute girl that I had a serious mad crush on whenever the video came on. "Happy Birthday," might've been featured in the film SIXTEEN CANDLES, but I'm not too sure. Probably in the background. You know the song was recorded in 1981? And hey -- the band reformed and did a tour just last year.
Back to my girl, Ava. She's a cutie pie.
i also just have to mention that this is a great photo! it resonates a style and works so well with your post. i also really like that tweed interior too!
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed that, she's a cute kid.
ReplyDeleteWe've an old beat up toyota with no radio, it's sad, but Molly and I make up our own songs about Pre-school,lollies puppy dogs, catching lizards etc....
It's amazing how much they have going on in those little heads.
How do you manage to always bring a tear to my eyes?....what a blessing!
ReplyDelete=) cute!
ReplyDeletebeth (molly)- fabulous tip. I have since tried it and it works and I love it. hours of fun for years to come (thank you)...
ReplyDeletenancila- yes, I do think I know where I can get my hands on a top of the line hidden camera (I think we both know where I can score that one)... wouldn't that be the greatest thing ever?
meredith- so happy to have reconnected you with an old 80s classic!
ward- sweet husband 'o' mine, you have so much information stored up in that cute head of yours... most especially as it relates to MUSIC. thanks for sharing.
joy- ava is so into hip hop, too (or, uncle nate's music, as she calls it)... another one of her all-time faves to listen to (over and over) is mars ILL'S 'breathe slow' (off of 'backbreakanomics')... she is hilarious to watch during this one, too...
so delighted that everyone enjoyed this almost as much as I did...
Oh, that is wonderful. I watch my seven year old daughter sing along to new (to her) songs in the rear-view mirror, too. I especially like to watch for her first reaction when I put on a song she hasn't heard before, like ELO's "Sweet Talkin' Woman" with the piano and the strings, et al, or the Spin Doctors' "Two Princes" which has a cool rhythm. The smile that comes over her face just because she likes the rhythm of the music should be one of the seven wonders of the world.
ReplyDeleteI love this song! I'm going to play it for my husband's birthday later this month...
