list one: things I've broken
1. three vintage ornaments. over the christmas break.
2. more promises than I'd care to admit plus a few hearts. one in particular.
3. the ragtop of my dad's '68 blue camaro convertible. after scrambling to the top of the car to hide from boys, I heard a terrific rip and felt my nine year-old body slip through the roof and land with a dull thud in the back seat. which is when I looked up, spied a sliver of blue sky and marveled at the sheer size of the hole I'd created. mere seconds before full blown panic set in.
4. the heel of a favorite vintage spectator pump. most likely purchased, worn (and broken) during what I now refer to as my marilyn monroe phase. also known as my sophomore, junior and senior year of high school.
5. my husband's favorite electric pencil sharpener. during an argument. yep, I threw it.
6. my left arm. after popping the most spectacular wheelie of my wheelie-popping career, I hit a bump in the driveway, went flying over the handlebars of my purple banana seat bike and broke the fall with my left arm. thus, fourth grade will forever be known as the year I broke a bone and rocked the plaster cast.
(one down, fifty-one more to go)

i love lists too, and this list is beautiful!
ReplyDeletealso i am confessing things this week to random people and i confess that when i first found your blog i printed pages and pages out to take with me to work because i was addicted. i have been visiting you blog daily for over a year now and you are still my favorite blog in the world!
i know that sounded kinda creepy, but i swear i am not a creep, just easily inspired, and a daydreamer.
wonderful list ... i've broken more things than i care to remember (surprisingly none of them bones) ... lovely though!
ReplyDeleteI love lists too and this idea of one a week for this year. Love this first one too. I've never broken any bones before - ouch.
ReplyDeletei have never broken a bone. can you believe it? i can't, especially considering my childhood.
ReplyDeleteLovely list! :)
ReplyDeletegreat list. not sure if i'm brave enough to write out all i've broken;)
ReplyDeleteWow, love this and Listography. Am now totally inspired to make a bunch of lists. Maybe not every week, but still. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteGreat list!!
ReplyDeleteI broke one of my grandmother's teacups the other day and almost wept. I'm a "don't cry over spilt milk" person most of the time, but that one hit home. I have a post half-written just about that cup!
ReplyDeleteI'm so inspired by your listmaking; I'm going to start listing on my blog, too!
ReplyDeleteI know you've got many, many followers, but I thought I'd drop a line and say that I've been lurking for awhile and you've been added to my blogroll. :-)
this list is amazing! especially 3, 4, &5
ReplyDeleteMost excellent.
ReplyDeleteThanks chica!
I imagine it must be cathartic to make a list like this. It's so important to be conscious of the life we're living; this is a brilliant in that regard.
ReplyDeleteA great start! Hooray!
ReplyDeletethese are gold! I think I could go on and on about things that I've broken to include close to 25... LOL.
ReplyDeletewhat a great list idea - oh boy, things I've broken...i don't think i have enough room here :) if it's any consolation on the christmas ornaments...i think my average is breaking about 1 a year!
ReplyDeleteI break a couple ornaments each Christmas, I've broken my foot in places jumping off a balcony,my wrist rollerskating, a dvd player recently and...this morning, a glass botle og Tazo Tea. That's just off the top of my head.
ReplyDeleteomg. this is too much fun. i might have to join you and play along. what a great way to get the creative juices flowing.
ReplyDeleteI was thinking of starting a project where I write love letters to things and people and places that I love. And then I deliver them. Like, there's this amazing house with a forest growing around it at 31st and Skidmore. I really wanna write a love letter to that forest-house. Anyway, I been crushing on this blog for a while now, but this last list, and the promise of so much more to come, has sent me over into true love territory. Your letter is coming soon, hula seventy. Just you wait.
ReplyDeletebreak anything but trust and you'll most likely be able to survive.
ReplyDeleteAbout that pencil sharpener...
ReplyDeleteReading along your list, that one stopped me in my tracks. Horrors!
As a pencil sharpener fanatic, may I recommend the iPoint from Costco, in case you are needing a replacement. Good price and does not eat colored pencils, just hones them to a nice pointy arrow, ready for blissful pigment dispersal. Amen.
this just shows your passion - for life, for expression. i love it.
ReplyDeletehere's to breaking more things in the future!
broken ornaments, broken teapots...they cry out for glue and a fun surface to mosaic. Voila--it's new again.
ReplyDeletei'm always so amazed at the emotion you can convey in your lists! maybe i read too much into it, but i was almost in tears for a few of these! it's like each one is a teaser for a great novel :)
ReplyDeleteI'm so curious what the pencil sharpener incident was about! I had a similar experience with a remote control...
ReplyDeletewhat a great list to start off a year of lists. #3 is definitely my favorite because you described the incident so well. I could really imagine being there, panic and all. good luck with your weekly lists!
ReplyDeleteI love this list! (Here via MommyCoddle.)
ReplyDeletemy husband and I have broken many chairs, being goofy, trying to cuddle... at least three papasans... none were ours.
ReplyDeleteoh, how in the heck did i miss this???
ReplyDeletethe imagery you create here with your dad's ragtop is beyond wonderful..i honestly felt like i was right there and about to get into trouble with you :)
speaking of which...when is our next chance to get into trouble together...?...any plans brewing...?
;)
I broke my grandma's lamp. I was 8 years old. It was a gift from her mother. I feel guilty about it still.
