We love the Pacific Northwest and dream of returning to Bellingham eventually, but this love causes conflicting feelings for me as my family is in Germany and I need to be closer to my ageing parents. So for now we are in the UK which is only a few hours drive away rather than ten hours on the plane (and I don't like flying). I have always been amazed at how dispersed families are in the States, flung far across all corners of the country. Often this is dictated by professional needs but I also see a trend back to the family and I think that's wonderful and needed. Whenever I embark on a big move these words by Anatole France give me comfort: <br /><br />"All changes, even the most longed for, have their melancholy;<br />for what we leave behind us is a part of ourselves; <br />we must die to one life before we can enter another.
